How to Play IPL Auction - Complete Guide

Step-by-step instructions to master creating rooms, bidding, and winning auctions.

📋 Before You Start

Requirements

  • A device with internet connection (computer, tablet, phone)
  • Modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • Friends who want to participate in the auction
  • Optional: Knowledge about IPL players (but not required!)
💡 Good to Know: You don't need any account creation, registration, or email verification. Just visit the site and start playing immediately!

🎉 Step 1: Create an Auction Room

Visit the Home Page
Open IPL Auction website. You'll see the home page with the "Create Auction" panel already selected. This is where you'll set up your auction.

Enter Your Name
Type your name in the "Your Name" field. This is how other players will identify you during the auction. Maximum 24 characters.
  • Use your real name or a nickname
  • Keep it appropriate for your group
  • Make it unique to avoid confusion with other players

Select Your IPL Team
Choose which IPL team you want to represent. Click on the team logo or name from the team grid. Your team will be your identity throughout the auction.
💡 Tip: Choose a team you support or like! The avatar will be shown to other participants.

Set Budget Per Team
Use the budget slider to set how much virtual money each team gets. Default is ₹2000L (matches official IPL).
  • ₹500-1000L: Tight budgets, fast game, strategic pressure
  • ₹2000L (Default): Balanced gameplay, realistic IPL experience
  • ₹3000L+: More depth, allows multiple premium stars per team

Set Maximum Squad Size
Choose how many players each team can buy. Default is 25 players (realistic squad depth).
  • 15 players: Quick, intense auctions
  • 20-22 players: Balanced, realistic IPL squad
  • 25+ players: Extended gameplay with deep benches

Configure Bid Timer
Set how many seconds each player is available for bidding. Default is 30 seconds.
  • 10-15 seconds: Fast-paced, suit experienced players
  • 30 seconds: Balanced pace, allows thinking time
  • 45-60 seconds: Slower, suits casual or learning games

Optional: Set Passcode
If you want a private auction, enter a passcode. Friends will need this code plus the room code to join. Leave blank for public auction.
Security Tip: Use a simple passcode like "123" or "ipl2024" that's easy for friends to remember.

Choose Player Order
Select how players should appear during auction:
  • Random: Unpredictable, keeps everyone engaged
  • By Category: All batsmen, then bowlers, then all-rounders (allows planning)

Create the Room
Click the "🚀 Create Auction Room" button. The system will generate a unique 6-character room code. Note this code!
✓ Success! Your auction room is now created and waiting for participants.

🔗 Step 2: Invite Friends to Join

Copy Room Code
On the lobby screen, you'll see the "Room Code" box. Click on it to copy the 6-character code to your clipboard.
  • Share this code via text message, WhatsApp, email, etc.
  • Friends enter this code in the "Join Auction" section on home page
  • Code format: ABC123 (6 characters)

Generate Invite Link
Click "Copy Invite Link" button to get a clickable URL. Share this link instead of code for easier joining.
  • Friends who click link automatically join your room
  • Works for public auctions
  • Can be shared on social media or messaging apps

Share on WhatsApp
Click "Share on WhatsApp" to get a pre-formatted message. Sends immediately to your WhatsApp contacts with room code and link.

Copy Private Invite
If you set a passcode, use "Copy Private Invite" to get a link with both code AND passcode embedded.

⚠️ Important: Keep your room code safe! Anyone with it can join. If you want exclusivity, definitely set a passcode.

🎯 Step 3: Join as a Friend

Go to Home Page
Visit IPL Auction website. Click the "Join Auction" tab to switch from "Create" to "Join" panel.

Enter Room Code
Type the 6-character room code the host gave you. Code appears in all capitals automatically.
  • Type carefully - codes are case-insensitive but specific
  • Example format: ABC123
  • If room exists, available teams will show below

Enter Your Name
Type your display name (max 24 characters). This is how host and other players will see you.

Enter Passcode (If Required)
If the host set a passcode for the room, enter it here. Leave blank if no passcode.
💡 Tip: Ask the host for passcode if you're not sure.

Pick Your IPL Team
Select which IPL team you want to represent. Click on available team logos. Some teams might already be taken by other players.
  • Each team can only be picked by one player
  • Choose a team you like!
  • Your team avatar represents you in the auction

Join the Room
Click "🚀 Join Auction" button. You'll be added to the room and can see other teams in the lobby.
✓ Welcome! You're now in the auction room. Wait for the host to start the auction.

🏛️ Step 4: Understanding the Lobby

Lobby Overview

In the lobby, you wait for all teams to join. The host can see configuration details and all teams in the room. Non-hosts see when the host is ready to start.

Room Code Display
Shows your room code. Click to copy it for sharing with other friends who want to join.

Team Grid
Shows all 8 IPL teams. Green teams are joined with player names. Empty slots show available teams.

Watchlist Feature (All Players)
Before auction starts, all players can star favorite players in their watchlist. During auction, starred players will be highlighted for you.
  • Click "My Watchlist" button to open watchlist manager
  • Browse players and star your favorites
  • You'll get alerts when watched players come up for bidding
  • Helps you not miss target players in the excitement!

Host Controls
Only the room host sees "Start Auction" button. Host can start when all teams are ready.
⏳ Waiting: If you're not the host, wait for the host to click "Start Auction". Don't refresh or leave the page!

💰 Step 5: Bidding During the Auction

How Bidding Works

Players appear one at a time. All teams can bid on each player. Highest bid when timer expires wins the player.

Player Displayed
A new player appears on screen with their name, role, and current team. There's a base starting price.

Bid on the Player
All teams can place bids. Click the bid amount or enter custom amount. Each bid must be higher than the previous one.
  • Look at your remaining budget (shown on screen)
  • Consider if you really need this player
  • Can increase bid incrementally: 1L, 2L, 5L, 10L, etc.

Watch the Timer
Count-down timer shows seconds remaining for this player (usually 30 seconds). When it reaches zero, auction for that player ends.
⏱️ Strategy: Don't bid too early! Wait to see if others are interested. Last-second bids often win at lower prices.

Highest Bid Wins
When timer ends, the team with highest bid wins the player. That team's budget is automatically deducted by winning bid amount.
  • Winning team gets the player in their squad
  • Other teams' budgets remain unchanged
  • Next player immediately appears

Monitor Other Teams
Track other teams' remaining budgets and squad sizes. This helps you make bidding decisions.
  • Can you out-bid competitors?
  • Do they have budget left for must-have players?
  • Are they nearly at max squad size?
❌ Danger: Once your budget runs out, you can't bid anymore! Manage it carefully throughout the auction.

Bidding Tips & Tricks

  • Don't rush: Wait for others to bid first
  • Jump bids: Large jumps discourage competitors (psychologically!)
  • Minimal bids: Increase only by 1L to save budget
  • Block competitors: Bid high on players you don't need to waste their budget
  • Reserve budget: Always keep 20% of budget for late surprises
  • Know your targets: Have a 5-player "must-win" list before auction

🏁 Step 6: After the Auction

Auction Completes
Auction ends when all players are sold OR every team reaches maximum squad size. Final standings are displayed.

View Results
See your final squad, budget spent, and rankings. Compare your team composition with others.
  • How many batsmen vs bowlers do you have?
  • What's your average player cost?
  • Did you build a balanced team?

Analyze Your Strategy
Review what worked and what didn't. What would you do differently?
  • Did you overspend on star players?
  • Did you miss important all-rounders?
  • Could you have managed budget better?

Host New Auction
Go home and create a new auction for another round! Apply lessons learned from previous auction.
Remember: Each auction is different. Compete with new configurations and player orders!

❓ Common Issues

Q: Room code not working?
Make sure you entered 6 characters correctly. Codes are case-insensitive. Check if you copied it accurately.
Q: Lost internet during auction?
Refresh the page and rejoin with the same room code. Your team and bids are saved on the server.
Q: Can't see available teams in lobby?
The room might be full (8 teams max). Ask host to verify room isn't at capacity. Or create your own room!
Q: Bid didn't register?
Ensure your bid is higher than current price. Check your available budget. Try again with higher amount.
Q: Page looks strange on my phone?
Rotate phone to landscape mode for better view. Try different browser. Clear browser cache.

Strategy 1: Scout Players Before Auction
Before starting, browse available players in the player list. Identify 15-20 targets across different price ranges. Add them to your watchlist. This gives you a clear plan instead of bidding reactively.

Keep mental notes of how much other teams are spending. When a team gets low on budget, stop bidding on their priority positions. Let them waste remaining money on desperation buys while you acquire value players.
Strategy 3: The Late-Game Surge
Don't spend more than 60% of your budget in the first 60% of auction. Always reserve 40% for final rounds. Late-stage players often have better value because depleted competitors can't bid aggressively.
Strategy 4: Bid Timing Psychology
Early bid (first 5 seconds): Signals interest, encourages competition, often leads to price inflation.

Mistake 1: Overspending Early

Don't spend 80% of budget in first 40% of auction. You'll run out of money for critical late-round players. Pace your spending evenly throughout.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Squad Balance

Don't load your squad 5 batsmen, 1 bowler, 1 all-rounder. You need balanced team: 6 batsmen, 4 bowlers, 3 all-rounders minimum for winning cricket.

Mistake 3: Chasing Every Bidding War

Not every player is worth fighting for. Sometimes letting competitive players overpay for stars while you grab undervalued mid-tier players is smarter strategy.

Mistake 4: Not Tracking Opponents

Ignore what other teams are doing at your peril. Track their remaining budget, squad composition gaps, and bidding patterns. Use this intelligence to outsmart them.

Don't love a player so much you'll pay any price. Your favorite star might not fit your auction strategy or budget. Emotional bidding loses money.
